Philadelphia Officer Killed In Accident

Posted: Updated:

A Philadelphia Highway Patrolman was struck and killed by an alleged DUI driver, driving the wrong way on I-95.

Officer Brian Lorenzo had just clocked out, and was driving his police motorcycle home just after 3am Sunday. That's when, police say, Officer Lorenzo was hit by a driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95, near the Cottman Ave exit.

Officer Lorenzo was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver, a 48-year-old man from Levittown, was taken to the hospital for his injuries. Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross announced at a press conference Sunday morning that the driver will be charged with DUI.

The northbound lanes of I-95 between Bridge Street to Academy Road remained closed for several hours after the crash, as police investigated.

Deputy Commissioner Ross says Officer Lorenzo was an active member of the police department, training new recruits on how to drive their "highway wheels", and was a participating member of the police department's annual Thrill Show.

Officer Lorenzo is survived by a wife and three children, ages 24, 22, and 4.  He also leaves a brother who serves in the 25th Police District.
