Sources Say Murdered Soccer Tourney Organizer Witnessed 2008 Killing

WILMINGTON, De. -

The gunned down organizer of a popular Wilmington soccer tournament may have been a witness to a 2008 murder, a source close to the investigation told FOX29.

Herman Curry, a well-known figure in New Castle County and youth mentor, hosted his 16th annual Marcus Garvey Soccer Tournament Sunday afternoon in Eden Park when shots rang out from several parties. Curry was killed along with a 16-year-old boy and another man.

Wilmington Police say Curry was specifically targeted, and investigators are looking into whether it was because of what he saw during his birthday party in 2008.  That's when a man was shot dead.  A family friend also tells FOX29 the murder happened when Curry was at the party.

Otis Phillips, one of two men arrested in the Sunday shooting, had an outstanding murder warrant for the 2008 homicide Curry is believed to have witnessed.

Otis along with Jeffrey Phillips were charged with multiple counts of first degree murder.  A third suspect died after being shot several times during the altercation.

Meanwhile family and friends packed the front lawn of Curry's New Castle County home.  Family spokeswoman Dr. Alison Allen said Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden even visited the family for a half hour.  Details of his visit are unclear.

Wilmington Police continue to investigate the Sunday shooting.
