Service Restored On Market-Frankford Line After 4-Alarm Fire

Posted: Updated:

A four-alarm fire that broke out overnight in the Philadelphia's Northern Liberties section is now under control.

The blaze broke out shortly after 2:30 a.m. at an abandoned warehouse on Front and Wildey Streets, just blocks from the Sugarhouse Casino and the Piazza at Schmidt's.

Firefighters placed the blaze under control at 4:14 a.m. but were continuing to work on hotspots flaring up again throughout the morning.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers confirms that a veteran firefighter was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital with back injuries after a bad fall. He is in serious condition. There are no others injuries to report, and no evacuations at this time.

This fire caused huge problems on Tuesday morning for commuters on the Market-Frankford Line.  Tracks were closed for over 12 hours as inspectors checked the tracks for serious damage.

In the meantime, shuttle buses were provided to weary commuters between Huntington and Spring Garden Stations. There were also shuttle buses along the entire line of the Route 15 Trolley.
