Penn State Case Draws Warning From White House

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney warned institutions and individuals to take the welfare of our children more seriously.

The comment Thursday came the day that investigators working for Penn State's board of trustees released their new report. That report says the school's top officials knew about assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a child in the shower but head coach Joe Paterno convinced them not to report the incident to law enforcement.

"What happened at Penn State is a reminder that institutions have, individuals and institutions have grave responsibilities to make sure that our children are taken care of and protected," Carney said. "And, you know, it is an indication that perhaps that – well there's a clear indication that that responsibility was not taken with the seriousness that it needs to be taken by institutions across the country."

Sandusky was found guilty last month on 45 of 48 counts for abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period.

He now faces life in prison and will return to court in two months for sentencing.
