After Report, PSU Trustees Admit They Failed

Posted: Updated:

An investigator delivering a report commissioned by Penn State said Thursday that there were "more red flags than you can count" surrounding Jerry Sandusky.

So, how did the board of trustees not know about the ongoing abuse?

Former FBI director Louis Freeh, said the trustees – the folks who set the tone of leadership for any university – did not know about either the 1998 or 2001 incidents.

In fact, Freeh says the board didn't seem to know much about anything Sandusky was doing right up until the moment cops slapped the handcuffs on him.

In November, prosecutors charged athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz with lying to a grand jury about what they knew about the allegations against Sandusky.

Freeh would not speculate on whether the late Joe Paterno should have faced criminal charges for his actions. But Freeh did say he thought the university's firing of the legendary head coach was justified.

"Most incredibly, most of the board members did not even know about the arrest until they read it in the newspapers. So, that would be, in my view, a failure of governance, a failure of oversight. And that has got to be a contributing cause to the continuing activities that have been so tragically reported here."

FOX 29's Jeff Cole went looking for answers at the news conference in Scranton where the trustees responded to the Freeh report Thursday afternoon.

"The board of trustees, as a group that has paramount accountability for overseeing and ensuring the proper functioning and governance of the university, accepts full responsibility for the failures that occurred, "Board of Trustees Chairwoman Karen Peetz told assembled media.

"The board, in cooperation with the administration, will take every action to ensure that an event like this never happens again," she added.

Task Force Chairman Kenneth Frazier said, "The questions were asked, the answers were given. They were not complete, thorough, open answers. We could have asked more questions."

PSU President Rodney Erickson said, "I, too, was horrified when I learned of the Sandusky allegations last year and, as I've watched the process unfold, it has become clear to me that I need to reconsider our community's leadership culture. Since I assumed the office of president last November, I have committed myself and my administration to addressing this important issue."
