A 28-year-old man is dead after police opened fire on him when he allegedly pointed a stolen handgun at them during a traffic stop in the city's Hunting Park neighborhood late Friday.
According to Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson Lt. Ray Evers, a sergeant from the 25th Police District had stopped Matthew Henderson, of the 4500 block of Cottman Avenue around 11:24 p.m. on the 4400 block of Rising Sun Avenue after observing him go through a red light at 2nd Street and Erie Avenue.
The sergeant reported that he smelled marijuana in the car after walking up to get Henderson's information, and called for backup from two additional officers. Once those officers arrived, Henderson allegedly got out of the car and pointed a gun at the three as they approached his vehicle.
According to Evers, the sergeant yelled "gun!" and he and one of the other officers shot Henderson four times. He was later pronounced dead at the scene, and a Taurus 40-caliber handgun, which had been reported stolen in Philadelphia, was recovered next to his body.
Evers said the department's Internal Affairs Division and District Attorney Seth Williams' office are investigating the shooting.
