Delaware State Police arrested a Smyrna man for attempting to rob and Amish couple near Hartly on Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened just after Noon as a 46 year old Amish man and 45 year old Amish female were operating a horse and buddy near Holly Island Road and Bryants Court Road. Mark Carter, 45, drove in front of the buggy armed with a handgun and demanded money from the couple. The couple was unable to produce money to Carter, after which he went back in his vehicle and fled the scene.
The victims were able to pass the registration number to 911 dispatchers. Police observed the vehicle traveling northbound on Peasons Corner Road and conducted a traffic stop. Police conducted a search of the vehicle and found a .22 caliber handgun, which was reported stolen from a residence in Smyrna on July 11th, as well as two guitars.
Carter was also wanted on outstanding warrants from Dover and Felton Police Departments. He is charge with two counts of 1st Degree Attempted Robbery, Possession of Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, 2nd Degree Burglary, and 2nd Degree Attempted Burglary, among other charges.
He is being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on $123,100 cash bond.
