The student group that camps outside Penn State's Beaver stadium is separating itself from the coach that put their football program on the map.
"Paternoville", as it's been known for years, now calls itself "Nittanyville". The student organization posted the change on its web site. The encampment has been around for years. It's a place where students gather to support the team, while waiting to get the best possible seats to see the Nittany Lions play. According to their web site, the name "Paternoville" first popped up in 2005. Now that group of devoted football fans have become the latest organization to separate themselves from the late Joe Paterno.
Just last week Nike removed Paterno's name from a child care facility in Oregon. Last year the Big Ten conference took Paterno's name off the conference's championship trophy.
The debate still rages about what to do with Paterno's statue outside Beaver Stadium. As of Monday, the university said they have yet to make a decision.
Organizations and others started separating themselves from the legendary coach following the findings of an internal investigation led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh. The report claims Paterno, along with former university president Graham Spanier, former vice-president Gary Schultz, and former athletic director Tim Curley deliberately concealed allegations of sexual assault on children by Jerry Sandusky. Freeh claimed the covered up the claims to protect the university from bad publicity. Paterno's family fired back, saying the findings are nothing more than Freeh's opinions, and further review is needed. They say Paterno told his superiors about an incident in 2001 where former grad student and coach Mike McQueary allegedly say Sandusky assaulting a child in a shower at the campus's football facility.
They say the report will not be the final word on the scandal. Either way, the image and reputation of a man who did so much for so many people, will probably never be restored.
