Family Donates $16.2M To Philly School System

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A wealthy businessman and his wife have made a 4-year, $16.2 million donation to the struggling Philadelphia school system and other educational institutions in the region.

Mayor Michael Nutter announced the donation by John and Leigh Middleton on Tuesday. He says the money will go toward educational needs, workforce training and professional development programming.

The money will be distributed through the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey to the city's school district, Philadelphia Academies Inc., Philadelphia Youth Network and Drexel University.

John Middleton, 1 of the owners of the Philadelphia Phillies, says he believes the district is at a "tipping point" and needs an infusion of resources.

The mayor's wife, Lisa, is president of Philadelphia Academies, which does career-focused programming for young people.

It was a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.

The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is that it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday.  That mild and humid air mass will fuel afternoon thunderstorms.

By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain.  It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
