TIPS: Teach Your Children To Protect Themselves

Posted: Updated:

DC Maxwell was on our 10pm show and our Good Day program this week talking about how to teach our children to protect themselves in the face of danger  - specifically from strangers and predators.

Here are some suggestions for parents:

1. Never send a child out alone. Always, at least, in pairs.

2. Agree on a well-lit route to travel.

3. Agree on cell phone communication upon arrival and departure.

Here are some suggestions for children:

1. Be aware of your surroundings.  Don't ignore any feelings of impending danger.  If something seems strange - it is!

2. Do not approach anyone who wants you to come closer to their vehicle - NO MATTER WHAT!

3.  Don't get into the vehicle, no matter what.  Try not to be removed from the initial point of contact.

4. Don't freeze! REsist. FIGHT.  Make as much noise as possible.  Remember, he has only two things to hold you with and you have five things to fight with - so use them all!!

5. Older children can help slow the assailant down by making noise, possible picking up something to attack the assailant with, but do not endanger yourself.  Do not yell fire - YELL "HELP US!"

6.  If you are the companion, remember as much as you can about the assailant's physical characteristics, such as face, height, weight (fat, thin), as tall as my dad, etc.
