New Mother Given Wrong Baby To Breastfeed At Hospital

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It's one of the worst things that can happen to a brand new mother.  The hospital gives her the wrong baby.

Shanice Sanford said it happened to her just hours after giving birth to her daughter at Pennsylvania Hospital.

She said nurses were preparing her to breast feed her child when they brought the wrong baby in.

"That's the scariest situation that any mother don't never want to be in," she said.

"Anything could have happened.  I don't want somewhere down the line in the future, something popping up with my child," she added.

What's more, Sanford said it took the hospital 30 minutes to get the right baby to her.  Hospital officials said her baby was in the nursery the whole time of the mix up.

The hospital is investigating the incident.

Penn Medicine Senior Vice President Susan Phillips released this statement:

"We are aware of an incident that happened yesterday afternoon where an infant was taken to the wrong room. While understandably distressing, the temporary mix up was quickly corrected and a subsequent review showed that all infants and their mothers were properly matched.

Staff were immediately reminded of the correct procedures.  We are investigating this incident fully and the employee who made the mistake was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of our review."

FOX29 will continue to follow this story as it develops.
