A 48-inch water main ruptured around 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of 21st and Bainbridge streets in South Philadelphia.

Almost immediately the streets began to flood, causing the evacuations of a three- to four-block radius, from at least 21st and 23rd streets to the east and west and from South to Fitzwater streets to the north and south.

Some residents had to be rescued using a raft.

Residents are being housed at the Edwin Stanton School at 17th and Christian streets with help from the American Red Cross.

The water department is fixing the main, while other city officials are testing the integrity of the roads.

Now, hundreds of people are hoping they can go back home Monday morning.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell was out at the scene during Sunday's 10 p.m. News, and Steve Keeley is reporting live from there Monday morning.

Just before 7:45 a.m., Keeley reported from the scene that crews trying to repair the water main had accidentally struck a gas main. Fortunately, gas crews were already at the scene to work on the new leak.
