DETROIT (WJBK) -

Bob Bashara's preliminary examination is about to get underway with witnesses, testimony and audio recordings that prosecutors say show Bashara tried to hire a hit man to kill Joe Gentz in jail.  All this just days after he tried to fire his attorney, David Griem, and Griem tried to quit the case.

The judge denied their requests and told them to get ready for Tuesday's preliminary exam, an exam they tried to have delayed twice before.  Griem told us he is ready.  He met with Bashara on Sunday at the Wayne County Jail to discuss strategy.  Bashara has not hired a new attorney as he had planned.

"The weird thing now is that David Griem is now Bob Bashara's best friend in the world.  I mean, David Griem better do a good job tomorrow because a lot is riding on this," said Fox 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton.

On Friday, prosecutors said three people are scheduled to testify at the hearing, including their star witness, the man who owns Steve's Furniture and Appliances in Detroit.  Bashara allegedly paid him $2,000 to find a hit man to kill confessed hit man Gentz.  A secret recording of that alleged deal will be played in court.

"Are these witnesses credible and is there enough evidence to go forward to trial.  Bob Bashara wants to know.  We want to know.  This is crucial for Bob Bashara tomorrow," Langton said.

Bashara still has not been charged with killing his wife, Jane, although Gentz is expected to cut a deal with prosecutors and eventually testify against the man he says paid him to kill her.
