Detroit: There is too much laying in the grass

Off the Chain Opinion

DETROIT -- It used to be couches and tires.

Now the open spaces of Detroit are being used to dump imported murder victims.

This month: two headless bodies from Allen Park fished from the Detroit River. Two murder victims plucked from an east-side field -- feared to be the missing teens from Westland.

Then there is the murdered woman from Grosse Pointe Park. The Back Page girls from Sterling Heights. The kidnapped women from Hamtramck. Detroit has a big problem. And the strategy from police headquarters? Duck it. Deny it. Post lame statements that crime in the city is on the downturn.

Downturn?

That's funny, because according to a single-page document I pried from the police department by way of the Freedom of Information Act, they don't know how many emergency calls they responded to in 2011 because of "computer malfunction."

Ask a question of the police brass and you get a sock puppet theater answer straight from Naked Gun.

Things went to a new low this week when a man was murdered in front of the police communications center. According to witnesses, the victim lay on the sidewalk for nearly four hours before police realized he was there.

Once someone did see him, it took the cops just two minutes to walk out front and confirm his passing.

Sgt. Eren Stephens, a department spokeswoman, called Fox 2 to complain that my television report was unfair and inaccurate. I stated that it took the police nearly four hours to pick up the victim.

Sgt. Stephens rightly pointed out that it was the job of the medical examiner -- and not the police -- to pick up the corpse.

My apology for the confusion.

The greater point is that the police are so mismanaged, so undermanned and underequipped that a person could die outside a department facility and nobody would notice until the sun rose. This is unacceptable.

And guess what they do at the communications center? Among other things, they are in charge of video surveillance. But I am told there is no videotape of the death outside their doors because the cameras are either broken or were pointed the wrong way.

Again. Unacceptable.

The people deserve the truth. They deserve some investment into the police department.

They deserve a timely response from a cop when their homes are burgled. The 'behind-the-curtain Wizard of Oz' mumbo jumbo is killing us.
