FOX 29 Gets Results On 'Hole Within A Hole'

PHILADELPHIA -

A nearly two-week old Philadelphia Streets Dept. dig has left folks in one Port Richmond neighborhood stewing these days.

As Deborah Garrett and her daughter Loetitia Kuzowsky gaze out from their front stoop at the mess in front of them on the 3600 block of Richmond St., they can't figure out which is worst:

-Maybe it's the fact that the hole forces southbound traffic to cross the double yellow lines to avoid the barricades.

-Or maybe it's the 10-ft. deep hole could swallow a small child or pet- but has mostly attracted adult scavengers.

-Or maybe it's the sewer gasses wafting from that open hole.

"When it rained the other day," says Deborah, "the fumes that came out of it was unbelievable...practically making you sick."

Loetitia says she has reached out to the city to try and get the mess cleaned up- or at least made safer:

"3-1-1...them. That's the ones that they said they'll come out and fix it."

So far?

"Nothing."

I called the Streets department and the Water department- both got back to me promptly-- the Water Department promising to re-set the manhole cover and ring, and the Streets Department vowing to follow up by filling the hole with concrete.

Deborah can't wait.

"It's bad- it's really bad."

That work is expected to begin Monday evening.  We'll keep you posted.

It was a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.

The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is that it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday.  That mild and humid air mass will fuel afternoon thunderstorms.

By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain.  It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
