Bail Raised For Man Arrested With AK-47 On Subway

PHILADELPHIA -

Bail has been raised for the man accused of being heavily armed with weapons when he stepped onto a crowded SEPTA train this week.

A judge revoked bail for Jermal Ponds until a hearing Friday morning, then raised the amount that he would need to post for release from the original amount of $150,000 up to $200,000.

District Attorney Seth Williams wanted bail set at $500,000, saying Ponds brought a "small arsenal onto a rush hour train"

Officers say Ponds was carrying a partially-disassembled AK-47 assault rifle, a loaded handgun and a bayonet when he was stopped Tuesday. Authorities had received a tip about the weapons from another rider.

Police said the AK-47 was being carried in the same compartment as a loaded 40-round magazine, and the handgun -- which Ponds allegedly did not have a permit to carry -- was also loaded.

Ponds also had marijuana and $700 in cash when he was arrested, which is drug-law violation, police said. The two dozen Percocet pills in his possession were apparently a legal prescription, but there was no label on the container.

Williams had all of the weapons brought into court Friday.

Even the judge said this could have been a major tragedy, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported from the courthouse.
