Girl, 7, Talks About Making Life-Saving 911 Call

NEWARK, Del. -

"I thought someone had heard me or something and called 911 and come to find out it was my daughter."

Chekita Stevens' 7-year-old daughter Keairra was watching television in their living room when she heard a loud bump coming from her mom's bedroom.

"I shaked her and said, 'Mommy, can you hear me?' and she didn't say anything, so I just called 911 to get some help."

Chekita was going into a diabetic shock, and Keairra was able to tell dispatchers exactly what was going on.

A combination of new insulin medications caused Chekita's blood sugar to go way lower than normal. Little Keairra was taught years ago that, if her mom was acting funny, to call for help.

Newark Police stress the importance of teaching children as young as 3-years-old how to dial 911 in case of any emergency.

"Teach your kids how to use your cell phone. Many parents don't want their children using their cell phone, but most households only have cell phones now. So the kids need to know how to operate those in order to give a call to us," says Master Cpl. Gerald Bryda, with the Newark Police Department.

If it wasn't for Keairra's phone call, Chekita knows the outcome would have been way worse.

"I'm very proud of her."
