Pocono Race Lightning Strike Kills 1, Hurts 9

LONG POND, Pa. -

There was a tragedy at Pocono Raceway on Sunday when a NASCAR fan died after a lightning strike Sunday in the raceway parking lot.

Nine others were hurt, and one of them was reported to be in critical condition Sunday night.

The Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono International Speedway was called after 98 of the scheduled 160 laps because of a thunderstorm.

Officials don't know if it was multiple lightning strikes or just one that hit the crowd as they were walking to their cars.

The victim's identity has not been released.

Jimmie Johnson had the lead until he spun out on lap 91. That caused Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle to both go into the wall. And a look at the replay and this mistake was a big help to Johnson's teammate, Jeff Gordon, as he took the lead because of the crash.

Then, the rains came, and there was no chance to race.

Gordon was declared the winner because the race was over halfway finished.
