Phillies' Sellout Streak Ends

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

In a season where nothing has gone right, the Phillies gave us some more bad news.  The team's run of consecutive sellouts has come to an end.

41,665 fans paid to see the Phillies fall to the Braves Monday night, about 2,000 short of the stadium's seating capacity. If you've been to a Phillies game recently, you probably thought the streak ended a long time ago.  Blue, empty seats have been noticed in the upper deck for weeks.  Many season ticket holders and others have unloaded their tickets online on sites like StubHub.com, where tickets go for as little as four dollars.

But as true Philadelphia sports fans will tell you: "There's always next year".

Phillies team president David Montgomery thanked fans for selling out "The Bank" year after year. The streak lasted 257 regular season games.

It began on July 7th 2009 against the Cincinnati Reds, a 4-3 Phillies loss.

It ranks as the longest sellout in the history of the National League, and is the third longest in Major League Baseball history.

Only the Red Sox with a current streak of 772 sellouts and the Cleveland Indians from 1995-2001(455 sellouts) were longer.

In that span 11,585,982 fans walked through the turnstiles at Citizens Bank Park.  The team's record during that stretch was 150 wins and 103 losses, 31 of those losses have come this year.

The Phillies still rank among the top in attendance in baseball, showing that despite how bad this season has been, Phillies fans are still coming out to see their team.
