What Your Car's Black Box Says About Your Driving

PHILADELPHIA -

We normally hear about a "black box" when we're talking about airplanes.

But, as we showed you on "Good Day" Wednesday morning, they can also be found inside some of the cars that are currently on the road.

Carmakers will soon be putting black boxes in all cars to record your speed and other information.

A bill approved by the U.S. Senate and likely to be passed by the House would require black boxes in all cars by 2015.

Police will be able to use this information if you are involved in a crash.

In the first video clip from Wednesday morning's "Good Day," car expert George Polgar showed where the devices are in some cars. He explained how they work and what exactly they are recording as you drive.

Basically the black boxes – now in 85 percent of vehicles on the road – record and store data but continue to erase over the old information until a crash occurs.

But how do authorities get this information, and is it legal? Joining "Good Day" later on Wednesday morning with some answers was attorney Amy Feldman (see the second video clip).

This can be good news for some, and not-so good news for people like actress, Amy Locane. The former "Melrose Place" star, who played Sandra Harling, is on trial for first-degree aggravated manslaughter, among other things, after allegedly crashing into a car while under the influence.

In that case, prosecutors would like to present data from the cars' black box as evidence.

Some groups have questioned whether privacy violations could occur. But Feldman noted that car crash victims could benefit from information that's gleaned from the black boxes of other motorists' vehicles.
