Manayunk Street Deals With 3rd Water Main Break In Year

PHILADELPHIA -

A water main break has been reported in Manayunk.

The break in a 12-inch water line was reported to be at Manayunk and Ridge avenues. The Philadelphia Water Dept. is at the scene.

Before 8 a.m., the water was flowing down Manayunk Avenue and taking up about a third of the street, FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito reported. The water level has since come down as crews shut off the flow through the main.

However, there is water in some residents' basements nearby.

Neighbors say they are fed up. They say it's the third water main break on the same street in the last year, and they're so angry about it that they already have a lawsuit filed against the city.

"It's a little bit annoying. Everybody's pretty much out on the street talking about it, trying to figure out how they're going to get to work," said nearby business owner Andrew Stimmler. "With all of the work that utility companies are doing right now, it pretty much makes this area impassable. In the past year we've had three water main breaks now. The homes around have been affected because the water has gone underneath the properties and undermined."

Stimmler added, "Water companies have come out and out pumps in the basement. And the amount of water that you've seen here earlier is pretty much the same amount they've been pumping out for two days straight."

The business owner said neighbors are still waiting to hear what the city will do for them.

"Some of the people have lawsuits pending against the city for the damage," Stimmler said. The city had said it wasn't their responsibility, that it was underground creeks after rains. But we had the water tested and ... it did have chlorine in the water."

Neighbors said they do still have water running in their homes, although the pressure is low and the water has some particles in it. There was no immediate word on how many customers were affected.

Although the water has been shut off to the main, several nearby streets are shut down, so give yourself some time to work your way through the area.
