Posted: Updated:

Deptford, N.J. - A driver is in custody after fleeing troopers and ramming a State Police cruiser. The preliminary investigation indicates that it began at approximately 9:20 a.m. when a motorist reported an erratic driver northbound on Rt. 55 in Clayton. A trooper from Bellmawr Station located that vehicle, a 2010 red Toyota Camry, as it got off the Deptford Mall exit.

When the trooper approached the vehicle on foot, the driver, Darren J. Rebel, 19, of Westville, attempted to elude the trooper, striking him and a car stopped at a traffic light. An off duty New Jersey Trooper witnessed this happen and followed the red Camry. That trooper was able to locate the Camry to the rear of BJ's Wholesale Club in Deptford, where it parked in a rear loading dock lot. Three of the occupants, two women, age 19 and a boy, 17 exited the car, but Rebel attempted to elude the off duty trooper. Rebel rammed the off duty trooper's car and turned around in the parking lot, driving at the off duty trooper who fired at Rebel.

Rebel was uninjured and fled the scene. He was apprehended a short time later on Byrd Avenue by a Deptford Township officer. The red Camry was also located and impounded at that home.

Rebel is being processed at Bellmawr State Police Station and charges are pending. The other three occupants of the vehicle are also being questioned at Bellmawr.   Rebel has been charged with 1st Degree Attempted murder of an officer--among other charges.

The injured trooper was treated for leg injuries at Cooper Hospital and released.

Identities of the involved Troopers and the other occupants of the vehicle are being withheld while interviews continue.

The Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is leading the investigation, which is the case in any Trooper-involved shooting. The information contained in this release is preliminary and subject to change. Nothing further is available at this time.

It was a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.

The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is that it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday.  That mild and humid air mass will fuel afternoon thunderstorms.

By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain.  It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
