Oakland Co. Executive L. Brooks Patterson injured in car crash

Posted: Updated:
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson is in recovering in McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac,  after a crash Friday in Auburn Hills.  Patterson's driver and two people in the other car were also hurt.

What happened at the intersection of Walton and Opdyke was way worse than a fender bender.  Two cars were smashed up and banged up bad.  Their shattered glass and automobile parts and pieces everywhere.

From the looks of it, you would assume that everybody involved was hurt in this one, and this accident did send four people to the hospital, including Patterson.

"Did suffer serious injuries, and he's currently in surgery and being treated," said Chief Deputy County Executive Gerald Poisson  "We expect a full recovery.  He benefited greatly from the great emergency response by the Auburn Hills team, and then, of course, when he got to the hospital, they've given him superior treatment here at POH-McLaren."

"Mr. Patterson was alert when he came in and he was talking to his staff.  He has some orthopedic injuries that are getting repaired as we speak," said Chief of Emergency Medicine Tressa Gardner.  "He had an injury to his scalp that's been repaired, and as I spoke of earlier, he had a couple orthopedic injuries."

Friday afternoon around four o'clock, according to Auburn Hills cops, Patterson was a passenger in a black Chrysler 300.  His driver was traveling eastbound on Walton when, "as it entered the intersection of Opdyke Road, it collided with a vehicle, a blue Volkswagen Passat that was trying to turn left or southbound onto Opdyke road from Walton Boulevard," Lieutenant Ryan Gagnon from Auburn Hills Police.

Investigators are still trying to figure out who is at fault, but they did share some preliminary findings with Fox 2.

"Volkswagen turned in front of Mr. Patterson's car and they collided there," said Deputy Director Tom Hardesty.  "Preliminary, it appears that Mr. Patterson's car was on a green light and it was a flashing yellow light for the westbound vehicle.  The accident is still under investigation, so we don't have all the details yet."

In the Passat were two men.  They along with Patterson and his driver, who we've learned spent a great portion of his career as a Michigan state trooper, all were taken to the hospital, all of them in serious condition though the man behind-the-wheel of the Passat managed to escape with minor injuries.

As an alternative to flowers, well-wishers may show their support for Patterson with a donation to The Brooksie Way Half Marathon & 5k Race, named in honor of Patterson's late son. Donations may be sent to:
