PHILADELPHIA - An armed man shot by a police officer in North Philadelphia is in critical condition.

Lt. Raymond Evers said Temple University police officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at the corner of N. 8th Street and W. Thompson Street at 1:40 on Sunday morning.

Officers engaged in a foot pursuit ending at the 1200 block of Franklin Street. Philadelphia police officers joined the chase, including an officer from the 26th district.

The suspect turned and pointed the gun at the officer, who shot and missed. Evers said the officer discharged his gun again, hitting the young man in his right shoulder and neck.

The 24-year-old man was transported to Hahnemann University hospital where he is in critical condition.
