OCEAN CITY, N.J. -

Ocean City has placed a temporary restriction on bathing along a portion of beaches due to what's being called a localized sewage leak.

The closure is between Stenton Place to Delancey Place, at the north end of the popular shore resort's boardwalk.

As a result of the sewage leak, some material may have entered the storm sewer system, officials say.

In a news release, Ocean City said water samples have been taken for testing at the direction of the Cape May County Health Department. Pending the results of those tests, the city expects bathing on these beaches to resume Tuesday. No contamination has been reported but the beaches were closed as a precaution.

"The swimming restriction is standard practice as a precautionary measure," the city's news release stated. "The remaining beaches along the seven miles of coastline in Ocean City remain open."

The closure, which is in the area of First and Third streets, occurred late Sunday afternoon, according to an update posted to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's website.

All other lifeguarded ocean, river and bay beaches are open, the site says.
