Robbers Attacking Women For iPhones In South Philly

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA -

Only on FOX: Police want you to be on the lookout for robbers going after victims for their cell phones.

In almost every case the victim was a woman, and police say the attacks are getting more and more violent.

Three of the attacks were right along the Broad Street corridor in South Philadelphia.

One of the victims, a college student, spoke exclusively Monday with FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser. She says she was robbed of her iPhone right on her front porch.

"My whole life is on my I-Phone. I've had one for four years," she said.

"It was really scary," she told Fox 29 in an exclusive interview. "I was on my front porch like trying to get in and he grabbed me and he grabbed my phone."

The 23 year old victim asked Fox 29 to protect her identity because she's afraid she could be victimized again.

She's one of six women in their early-20s who've been attacked and robbed of their cell phones and other valuables since late July.

"There is definitely a predator on the loose in South Philadelphia," police Capt. Larry Nodiff said. "He is violently attacking women from behind."

In one incident, on the 1600 block of Mifflin Street, two guys on bikes pulled up behind a woman, threatened her with a hammer and stole her iPhone.

All of this has police reminding women to take another look at videotape of a suspect who stalked his women on a bike back in June, then choked and robbed them. He still hasn't been caught.

"This might be the same perpetrator, so we would ask everyone to please closely look at the video," Nodiff said.

Women in South Philadelphia admitted that they're worried.

"I always walk by myself so it's kind of upsetting," said Brittany Ruddock.

"I have mace," said the victim who spoke to FOX 29. "I just think being aware of your surroundings and not giving anyone the opportunity to do anything is the best preventative measure."

Late Monday, Police said three more attacks, two of them on Passyunk Avenue, were carried out by a suspect on a bike. In each case, the man robbed women victims of the cell phones and valuables using a black handgun.

Police are not sure if the same suspect or suspects are connected to all of these attacks and robberies. They are urging all women to be aware of their surroundings and report anything suspicious by calling 9-1-1.
