Camden Residents Fight to Save Police

Posted: Updated:

Camden city council got an unexpected surprise at their meeting Tuesday evening.  Dozens of angry community members packed city hall to speak out about the city's plan to layoff about 270 police officers.

Prior to the meeting, residents and police supporters marched in the rain through the city's streets to call for the removal of Mayor Dana Redd.  Last week Redd announced she would produce a plan to layoff every police officer by the end of the year.  She says it's a cost cutting move that will ultimately benefit the city.  Camden would instead be policed by a county-wide department made up of officers from other areas.

Residents and others at Tuesday's meeting disagreed.  Among them was national Fraternal Order of Police President Chuck Canterbury who said Camden residents deserve to be protected by Camden police officers, not county officers.

If it goes through, the county-wide department will be comprised of 400 officers, much more than the city's currently police force.  Critics however say those officers are not from Camden, and do not have any connection to the community.
