NJ Mayor's DWI Charge Divides Community

GREENWICH TWP., N.J. -

There's a debate in Gloucester County over whether a mayor should be forced to step down after being charged with driving under the influence.

Police say they stopped Greenwich Township Mayor Fred Grant going 91 miles-per-hour in a 45 mile-per-hour zone.

They say he smelled of alcohol and a sobriety test found he was over the legal limit.

At last night's packed council meeting, many called for his resignation, but other residents think he should keep his job.

"I've apologized for the negativity my situation has brought to the community," Grant said at the meeting. "I've embarrassed myself and my family."

Nut one council member asked, "What kind of example does that set?"

Two business owners who saw mayor grant shortly before the arrest said they don't think he was actually drunk that night.

FOX 29's Shawnette Wilson has more details in this video report from outside Tuesday night's council meeting.
