PHILADELPHIA -

Police are investigating an overnight homicide in Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion section.

They say a 19-year-old man was sitting on his front steps on the 1600 block of North 29th Street when a suspect approached and opened fire.

About a dozen shots were fired, and the victim was struck in the neck, chest and hip.

"Based on ballistic evidence on the scene, we know that at least 12 shots were fired from a semi-automatic handgun, 9-milimeter," Chief Inspector Scott Small said. "We know that these shots were fired at point-blank range because where the body was laying all 12 casings were within feet of that body, which indicates that the shooter came right up and shot this individual."

The victim was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital shortly after 1 a.m.

The gunman was described as wearing all black. Witnesses say the shooter left the scene in a green Pontiac Grand Prix.

After a relatively quiet week, the city's homicide count is now up to 224, or 26 more than the same point last year, or about one more per week.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has more details in this video report.
