Minneapolis police investigating 2 murders in 24 hours

Posted: Updated:

Minneapolis police are looking for suspects connected to two separate shootings within 24 hours.

Police say three men burst into an after-hours house party on the 2100 block of Penn Avenue North around 3 a.m. Saturday morning and opened fire, killing 21-year-old Lavalle Priest and injuring another man.

About 18 hours later, at 8:45 p.m., police were called to a shooting on the opposite side of the city. A 30-year-old man was shot in the hallway of an apartment building at the corner of 22nd and Portland Avenue South. The man made it outside, collapsed and later died at the hospital.

"I was watching my TV you know and I heard a shot," said Maria Gonzales, who lives in the apartment building. "I heard a lot of people running and screaming, oh my god. I asked my neighbor what happened, someone got killed, oh my god."

Inspector Lucy Gerald said investigators have no leads and do not know why the victim was at the apartment building in the first place. He does not live at that location and does not seem to have connections to it.

"That is not a problem address for us," said Gerald. "We do not have many 911 calls there at all, not a source of complaints so we do not know why he was there and what the source of this was at all."

Gerald adds there does not seem to be a connection between the two shootings.

"Whenever we have shootings in close proximity, time and date we look for connections but it does not mean there are connections."

Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to call the Minneapolis Police Tips Line at 612-692-TIPS (8477)
