Family, Friends Hold Vigil for Fallen Philly Officer

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

There was a compelling silence as Wayne Walker, the grief-stricken mother of fallen Philadelphia Police Officer Moses Walker Jr. walked over to the spot where her son was gunned down early Saturday morning.

She was ushered by family members, and police Commissioner Charles Ramsey where they prayed, cried and embraced in a moment of deep sadness.

"Gob bless my son," she said.

There were at least 100 people that gathered at the candle light vigil including members of the community that came out to honor the third officer to die this year.

"I miss you.  Why did this have to happen?" one of his aunts cried out at the vigil.

"I love you and my God bless you."

Walker had just left work at the city's 22nd District, even turning down a friendly ride home, when someone confronted him and shot him several times in the chest and abdomen.  He was found dead on the sidewalk along the 2000 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue.

His gun was found under his body.

Police believe the suspect was trying to rob him, but details are not yet clear.  Ramsey said investigators don't have anything "concrete" just yet.

"We're talking to a lot of people.  I wouldn't call them all witnesses.  There are people that may have information, that may not have information.  We're just trying to make as many contacts as we can."

They are also checking for any surveillance video that might provide clues.

As the family grieves, there is now a $35,000 reward posted for any information that leads police to an arrest.  Philadelphia Police put up $20,000 and the Fraternal Order of Police sponsored another $15,000.
