Philly Teachers, Nutter Assail GOP Education Plan

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia's mayor and dozens of teachers are blasting the Republican plan to cut money for education.

They say Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's budget plan would slash $186 million for schools in Pennsylvania, and 12,000 kids would lose their spots in Head Start programs in the next two years.

Then there is higher education. Opponents say Romney's plan also cuts scholarships and work study programs.

"To put it simply, the Romney-Ryan budget plan would make college dramatically less affordable and more expensive for hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania students and their families, who deserve a fair shot at going to college or higher education," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said.

South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn joined the mayor to push for more money for education.
