DETROIT (WJBK) -
"Once I saw her smile, it was over for me," said Renee Compton.
Who would abandon a beautiful toddler? It happened on Detroit's east side Monday afternoon near Nevada and Van Dyke.
Witnesses said a black man in his twenties walked up to a bus stop with the toddler and then just walked away leaving her standing there.
Thankfully the bus stop where she was abandoned is right outside the Perfecting Church.
"I think it's great that our church is open on a Monday afternoon at three o'clock," said Pastor Marvin Winans.
A good Samaritan saw the toddler and walked her into the church.
"She couldn't say her name. When I tried to say 'mommy' to see if any type of response came out, nothing," Compton said.
She and the staff at Perfecting kept the toddler comfortable as they waited for police.
"She was sociable. She never cried. The entire time she was here she never cried out for anyone," Compton remarked. "When they came to get her, she kind of held onto my neck and just in that little time she had bonded."
Police brought her to the precinct. They spent hours keeping her as comfortable as possible, but the question remains, who is this toddler? Hopefully someone who loves her will step forward and give her the stability she deserves.
"It's sad that we have a society that really doesn't value life," Winans said.
If no one comes forward, the girl will be taken to Child Protective Services.
If anyone has any information, Detroit Police ask that you call the Child Abuse Unit at (313) 596-5329.
