A judge in Gloucester County, New Jersey, ordered a teenager held for at least two more weeks in juvenile detention, after investigators accused her of trying to kill her family. It happened before dawn on Saturday, as the girl's family slept.
Her family insists the 15-year-old at the center of this case is not who you might picture. "She's an athlete," her lawyer Richard Josselson told Fox 29. "She played softball and soccer in high school last year," Josselson continued. "She's hopefully going to do that again. She's an honor roll student and has never been in trouble before."
But she's in big trouble now. Investigators say she used gasoline to light a fire on the second floor of her family's home in Clayton, Gloucester County, where she lived with her mother and stepfather. Six people were injured, including the suspect herself, her mother, and two children. "She's very distraught, very upset obviously about what happened, and about the injuries that were sustained," Josselson insisted.
In a big show of support, about two dozen members of the girl's family showed up Tuesday for her detention hearing, where the judge ordered her held for psychiatric evaluation. A cousin told Fox 29 the teenager had just moved home to her mother's house last week, but didn't want to stay. The cousin said the girl wanted to continue living with her father in Pennsauken, where she could return to the high school there for her sophomore year. Instead, she's facing attempted murder charges now, and waiting to find out whether she'll be tried as an adult. "Obviously the penalties are much more severe as an adult, and having never been in trouble before, and because of her young age, that's where she belongs, in juvenile court," Josselson said.
The prosecutor in Gloucester County has not decided yet whether to try the suspect as a juvenile or as an adult. The girl is scheduled to return to court on September 5th. Her family is expected to recover.
