2-Year-Old, Mother Die In Alleged Murder-Suicide

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

A Camden mother is accused of something awful. She allegedly killed her 2-year-old son before killing herself.

Camden police are investigating the case as a murder-suicide after originally responding to a 9-1-1 call by the mother from her apartment on the 1400 block of Kaighns Avenue in the Parkside section of the city.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported from the scene that officers who arrived first found the child's headless body and ran back out to take cover and call for backup, knowing someone was still upstairs. The 9-1-1 operators and police kept talking to the mother, but soon police decided to go inside. That's when they found the mother dead of a stab wound to the neck.

The mother has been identified as 33-year-old Chevonne Thomas. The son was 2-year-old Zahree Thomas.

The mother also has an older child, who was not home at the time of this incident.

The 3-year-old's father came to the scene shortly before 7 a.m., just before medical examiners brought the mother's and child's bodies out of the apartment.

Keeley was live at the scene Wednesday morning with more details in this video report.
