Police say wild chase in Detroit involved man with baby

"I thought it was crazy.  He was absolutely crazy," said neighbor Levada Veasey.

That's the best way to describe what happened in a Detroit neighborhood Tuesday evening.  It all started when a Ferndale police officer spotted a stolen car cruising along Eight Mile.

Dash cam video shows the officer tried to stop the car.  That's when a wild chase began hitting speeds of at least 70 miles an hour.  It lasted about a mile, then the driver stopped the car on a lawn and took off.

"The suspect jumped out carrying a baby," said Ferndale Police Lieutenant William Wilson.  "He was supposedly baby-sitting this child, who was, as I understand it, his girlfriend's baby.  He was not the father."

Police have identified the driver as Vilarie Reed.

"He ran with the baby, jumped over fences, ran into backyards," Wilson explained.

John Abner told us the suspect then gave the baby to his wife.

Police eventually caught up with Reed.  He is actually on parole right now for fleeing and eluding police and possessing a stolen vehicle.  He is being held on a $25,000 bond.

"It's just disgusting that anybody could put a young child through a situation like this, endanger them as they did," Wilson said.

The baby is back with his mother, but Child Protective Services has launched an investigation.
