Families Homeless After Allentown Fire

Posted: Updated:
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Fire ripped through eight Allentown homes.

Smoke billowed as flames skipped roof to roof ravaging rowhouses in the 800-block of North 8th Street.

Kristen Ramirez watched 9-years of her  life go up in smoke.

"We have nothing," Ramirez said. "Everything was in the house except for the clothes that are on our backs."

Rafael Rodriguez was thankful he and his roommate Gloria Arroyo were able to get their little loved ones to safety.

"Getting my kids out my house and my pets,  that's all I was worried about," said Arroyo.

The fire started just two doors down from Gloria and Rafael's home, in the back of unit 854.

Investigators say something in the kitchen likely sparked the flames.

Fortunately no residents were injured.

The heat and humidity forced firefighters to sit with towels on their heads to cool off.

Five firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

At least 6 others were  treated on the scene.

Union president John Stribula  is blaming part of the firefighters fatigue on budget cuts that recently reduced the number of firefighters on staff.

"It's like football. You play offense and defense. If our playing both sides your going to fatigue faster and we saw that today coupled with the heat and humidity."

More than two dozen people's lives will never be the same because of the Allentown  fire  on North 8th Street.

Kristen Ramirez just thankful her family got out alive and is able to rebuild.

"it's bad. It's real bad. But you know what? Everyone has to start over at some point. Guess this is it."
