Home Explosion Rocks Philadelphia's Tacony Section

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Neighbors along the 6800 block of Vandike Street in Philadelphia's Tacony section woke up to the sound of an explosion and glass shattering as a home caught fire.  It happened Friday morning.

"Boom!" is how neighbor Preston Howard described the sound.  "(I) thought it was a car accident," he said.

A man inside the home, identified by family members as Joseph Brown, suffered severe burns to his face, arms and torso.  He was transported to Temple University Hospital for treatment.

Neighbors say there had been tension on the block and believed someone might have tossed something inside the house to spark the blast.

However, the Philadelphia Fire Marshal's office has yet to confirm the cause.  They did call in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the Homeland Security Department to help determine the origin.

Homeland Security sources told FOX29 there did not appear to be any criminal element to the explosion, but the investigation continues.
