Thieves made off with the home's furnace as well.
The Spencer family discovered a broken garage door, dirty mattress and empty fast food bags inside what was supposed to be their garage.

DETROIT (MyFox Detroit) - What was supposed to be a Detroit family's dream home was stripped down to nothing by a group of suspected squatters. And the culprit may be a Detroit-based rapper. Ken and Orna Spencer found their dream home next to a golf course in a quiet neighborhood on the city's west side. "It felt like home," said Orna. "It was so nice."
But before the family closed on the government-owned home, they say squatters moved in and stripped it of everything, including the copper, plumbing, door handles, furnace and more.
Realtor Rehri Onamake says she noticed a group of men inside the home while checking on it before closing. The suspected squatters claimed they had bought it from a mystery man. But the kicked-in door told a different story.
Police were unable to remove the squatters since it was a civil matter and the Spencers did not officially own the property.
The Spencers returned to the home Tuesday to find the suspected squatters gone. But they left behind a notebook. The cover read 'Cartier.' On the inside, addresses and what appeared to be a legal document belonging to Clyde Bruner, a.k.a. Young Cartier.
A YouTube video shows him as a Detroit rapper who Orna and Onamake say they confronted just days ago. "They waved to us goodbye as we drove off," said Orna.
Bruner did not returns calls placed by FOX 2.
The Spencers are leaning towards walking away from the home all together.
The notebook was given to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They are said to be following up on the issue.
