A 49-year-old man faces animal cruelty charges after Pennsylvania SPCA Humane Law Enforcement removed what officers described as four "severely emaciated" dogs from a Southwest Philadelphia home.
According to the SPCA, the dogs were taken out of a home on the 1900 block of South Redfield Street on Wednesday.
The dogs, three females and one male -- all a pit bull-type breed -- were found in various parts of the house. The SPCA says some of the dogs were near death.
One of the female dogs died shortly after she was removed from the home, according to the SPCA.
"We've seen a lot of skinny dogs, but these were among the worst," George Bengal, director of Humane Law Enforcement, said in a statement. "Several could not even lift their heads or walk on their own."
The SPCA says they have arrested James I. Gilliard.
The dogs are now in the care of the Pennsylvania SPCA and are currently undergoing treatment.
