Officers Save Man From Fiery Crash

Posted: Updated:

Three brave Barnegat police officers saved a man from a burning car Friday night.

Police say Patrolmen George Martin, Nicholas Venuto, and Andrew Parsley (pictured) were responding to a serious accident on Route 72 near the Burlington County line.

86-year-old Angelo Pereira lost control of his 1987 Chrysler and ran off the road. The car crashed into a tree and caught fire.

The three officers saw Pereira trapped inside and smashed the driver's side window to get to him. It took them almost two minutes to get him out.

Pereira was flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with severe burns on his arms, along with rib injuries.

Patrolman Venuto suffered smoke inhalation, and Patrolman Martin had 2nd degree burns on his right arm.  Both men were treated for their injuries and are back on duty.
