2012 Minnesota State Fair photos

Monday marked the last day of the great Minnesota get-together, and it was bittersweet for many fairgoers as they watched the lights dim while the Minnesota State Fair came to a close.

After spending 12 long days at the Minnesota State Fair -- and averaging about 16 hours a day during each one, it's no surprise trailers full of farm animals started rolling off the grounds a few hours before closing.

"Probably the ducks are more ready than I am, I suppose. They have probably been mad at me since I brought them up here since they are out of their pool," said Lance Ewert.

But hey, at least they are not on a stick.

A few steps away, Larry Abdo admitted he is about to go through fair withdrawal after spending at least 12 hours a day serving up his bacon on a stick.

"I have four sticks a day and two bourbons to go with it," said Abdo. "I am so disappointed that I will go into absolute depression at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon."

Organizers were busy this year with a few added obstacles. Early on, two rides broke down a few times, there was a stabbing last Sunday and health officials had to battle a new strain of swine flu -- but none of that stopped crowds from filling the fair.

As of Sunday, fairgoers did not break any attendance records, but the total number of attendees is on pace top the over all records by about 20,000 people.

"Labor day is always bittersweet. It's sort of like the day after a wedding or the day after any big event," said Briana Schuette, spokeswoman for the for. "And yet, it feels good to have accomplished this big event"
