PHILADELPHIA -
"Despicable," that's what police are calling the actions of 56-year-old Dwayne Young.
He's the suspect whom investigators say kept a 63-year-old handicapped man prisoner in his basement for over four months until he was finally freed by police on Sunday.
"He was being held against his will, and at times there were threats made," Captain Larry Nodiff of South Detectives told FOX 29.
Investigators say the victim is deaf and unable to speak. He was kept locked up in a basement room with a bed, a chair and a bucket-like commode as a bathroom facility. All the phones in the Southwest Philadelphia house were disconnected.
While the alleged man was held captive, police say Young was cashing his $600-a-month Social Security check and walking around with his ATM card and identification.
"The motive here was to profit from his Social Security income," Nodiff explained.
Asked if he's glad his brother is safe, James Richardson, "Yes, sir, very glad."
Richardson filed a missing persons report way back in April, when police say the victim was abducted off the street at 18th and Washington in South Philly.
Richardson got a chance to visit with his brother after he was freed.
"Very relieved. Terribly happy," he said. "Proud of the results that the police got."
Richardson can't believe anyone would lock up his brother for months on end.
"Terribly glad to have him home," he added.
"I cannot even imagine the mental anguish that he went through," Nodiff said.
Police say the victim was not injured and did not need to be hospitalized. He was extremely hungry when investigators broke into the room where he was held captive. He is now being housed through the District Attorney's Victim Advocacy Program.
Sources tell FOX 29, detectives are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of Young's common-law wife in March and what happened to her Social Security checks.
She, too, was handicapped. She is the sister of the victim in this case, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.
