More NJ Schools Dealing With Mold Problems

Posted: Updated:

Property damage vans were outside of Jordan Road School in Somers Point, N.J. for most of what was supposed to be the second day of school Thursday.

The discovery of mold in several classrooms has delayed the opening of the school year until next Tuesday.

Jordan Road students aren't the only ones with an extended summer break.

Dawes Avenue and New York Avenue schools are also delaying opening until at least Monday of next week as they undergo surface and air quality tests. No mold, however, has been found in either school at this point.

Although Ocean City High School was back in full swing Thursday morning as planned, mold was found in several classrooms and the school auditorium.

School officials say these areas will remain closed until they've determined it's safe to reopen them.

Both Ocean City and Somers Point school district administrators say they take the discovery of mold very seriously and will undergo the proper testing to ensure the safety of students. These safety guidelines are enforced by a state agency, not the local county health department.

Somers point superintendent Jeff Miller tells Fox 29 News he met with testing companies to determine what they found in these schools and if they need to open any later.

Northfield Community School in Atlantic County and Weymouth Township School have also delayed the start of the school year mold was discovered in some of the classrooms.
