Airport 'Hoax' Causes Search of Passenger And Plane

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Authorities made it very clear that the anonymous phone call which forced them to order a plane back to Philadelphia Thursday morning and search it, was no laughing matter, even though it turned out to be a hoax.

"There was a threat, but that threat was unfounded," said Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan of the city's Counter Terrorism Unit. "That flight was never in any danger."

"This is not a joke, it's a felony," said U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan at the airport.

It started at 7:30 a..a.m.. when someone called airport police, gave the name of a passenger on the U.S. Airways flight and claimed he had liquid explosives on board. That, coupled with a Facebook posting from the passenger about breezing through security, caused experts to order the plane back from the skies over Harrisburg.

Police and FBI agents quickly boarded it with guns drawn and removed a passenger named by the anonymous caller.

"He was obviously very alarmed as I would be if heavily armed police officers entered a plane to take me off. He was certainly stunned," Chief Sullivan explained.

Other passengers were checked and allowed to get off. Luggage was removed and inspected by police and explosive sniffing dogs.

"There was absolutely no threat on that plane," Sullivan added.

Sources say authorities quickly tracked the phone call to the former boyfriend of the passenger's one time girlfriend. The FBI took that man in for questioning, along with the woman. The FBI says the caller who caused all this chaos faces potential charges of interfering with a flight.

"Obviously there will be severe charges," said FBI Assistant Special Agent In Charge Richard Quinn.

As for the unsuspecting passenger caught in the middle of this highly dangerous scheme, he traveled on to Dallas with the other passengers. Authorities called him a victim.

"He committed no crime, has done nothing wrong," Sullivan said.

Fox 29 has identified the passenger, but we are not using his name because police say he's a victim. He was totally cooperative. There were some tense moments when police boarded that plane with guns out.

A source says SWAT officers ordered passengers to put their hands in front of them and not to move. Then they quickly took the passenger in question off of the plane, not knowing if this was a real threat or if there were real explosives on board.

One officer told Fox 29, "That will get your heart racing first thing in the morning."
