New Castle Delaware Woman Dies From West Nile

Posted: Updated:

Lorette Garret says she worries a lot about mosquitoes and the risk of getting West Nile.

"I live by the water so there's always going to be mosquitoes," she said. She's especially worried when she takes the grand kids out for a walk in Battery Park near her home in New Castle Delaware.

"I think about the kids and if they contract it what could happen, " Garrett said.

Some people out at the park are even more concerned after state health officials said Thursday a 76-year old New Castle woman died of West Nile. The woman also had existing health problems.

Tim Robinson is shocked. "I heard on the news that some woman in Delaware had West Nile but I didn't know she passed away."

Another couple out sitting on a park bench say they aren't worried. Bob Jones said, "I don't really give it that much thought." He and Pat Bowen said they don't take precautions and still feel their risk is low.

"Where I live, I'm not out where there are mosquitoes because there's no stagnant water so I feel safe. I'm not concerned with getting it," said Bowen.

Lorette Garrett is concerned so she uses insect repellant but worries if that's enough.

"I don't want to get it," said Garrett.

State health officials also say two people in Wilmington have been treated for West Nile. One is an 80 year old woman, the other is a 34 year old man. They believe he got it while traveling out of state.
