Airport Hoax Suspect Released On Bail, Feds Motive Was Revenge

PHILADELPHIA -

Twenty-six-year-old Kenneth Smith Junior walked out of federal court saying very little. He had nothing to say about his alleged involvement in Thursday's hoax at Philadelphia International Airport that forced authorities to divert this plane back here after a threat that a passenger on board was carrying liquid explosives.

"Frankly he's very embarrassed," said William Brennan, Smith's defense attorney.

Investigators now say Smith admitted he called in the threat from a payphone near his Port Richmond home as part of a plan to avenge his girlfriend after a passenger on the flight, 29-year-old Christopher Shell, had posted a compromising photo of her on Facebook.

"It's the kind of photo that would incense a boyfriend," Brennan claimed.

As a result of Smith's call,  U.S. Airways Flight 1267 returned to Philly and was boarded by SWAT teams. Shell was taken off and searched. Investigators found nothing dangerous or illegal. Shell was allowed to go back on his trip. Federal agents tracked down Smith who admitted he called in the hoax.

"The government is treating this as a very serious matter," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Williams.

"I don't believe my client had any ill will or meant any harm or disruption of service," Brennan added.

Shell meanwhile was arrested when he landed in Dallas on two outstanding warrants for drug charges. He was detained by the local sheriff. Shell told investigators Smith and his ex-girlfriend were behind the so-called nasty trick that accused him of carrying liquid explosives.

"When the individual departed the plane, he was picked up on outstanding warrants. One could argue my client did a service," Brennan quipped.

The judge ordered Smith to report to parole and probation every day. He cannot go anywhere near Christopher Shell. His attorney says Smith works 67 hours a week at a local pizza place as a chef.  He has no prior criminal record.
