Mold To Keep Northfield School Closed For 2 More Weeks

NORTHFIELD, N.J. -

Elementary and middle school students at the Northfield Community School are getting a nearly month-long summer bonus. That's because school leaders closed their school building through Friday, Sept. 21, following the discovery of mold.

The school is set to begin the year on Monday Sept. 24, with the hopes that property damage crews clear up the mold by that date.

Class was supposed to begin last week, but administrators posted signs on all of the doors saying the school would be closed Thursday and Friday, Sept. 6 and 7.

They wanted to have the problems fixed by Monday, but sources say scheduling troubles arose when arranging environmental experts to inspect the site.

The mold is blamed on high humidity levels along with heavy rainfall in recent weeks.

It turns out, Northfield is not alone in their mold troubles.

The nearby Somers Point School District announced late Friday three schools will not open at all next week. New York Avenue School, Jordan Road School, and Dawes Avenue School all have crews working to remediate mold in their buildings.

In a situation similar to Northfield, administrators first canceled the rest of classes last week when the problem came to light. Now, clean-up teams need more time to do their work.

Air tests are being conducted on a regular basis. District officials say they are monitoring the clean-up daily.

Health experts say mold can cause skin and eye irritation as well as breathing difficulties.
