Dangerous Parvovirus Kills 3 Dogs In Delaware County

PHILADELPHIA -

A very contagious virus has killed three dogs in Delaware County. It's called parvo, and it attacks the lining of the intestines and white blood cells.

But it can be prevented.

Dr. Sheila Maier, of the Somerdale Animal Hospital, visited "Good Day" on Monday morning to explain more about the virus and how to know if your dog has it.

The parvo virus is spread by oral contact with dog feces. Humans cannot contract the virus, but they can carry it.

Symptoms include vomiting, bloody diarrhea and lethargic behavior.

The treatment is to vaccinate your dog. When there is an outbreak, do not take your dog to the dog park, prevent your dog's contact with unfamiliar dogs, clean exposed paws and don't share water bowls or food bowls.
