PHILADELPHIA -
Today marks the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
This morning, the president and first lady will gather on the White House's south lawn for a moment of silence. Afterwards, they'll attend a memorial service at the Pentagon.
In the afternoon, the president will visit with wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center.
The vice president will visit the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta visited the Flight 93 Memorial for the first time Monday. He walked down to the wooded area where the plane crashed and met with relatives of the 40 people who were killed.
Flight 93 was traveling from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when it was hijacked by four terrorists. The plane went down in a field near Shanksville after passengers and crew fought back.
Thousands gathered at the memorial Monday night to remember those who died. Forty lanterns lit up the night. As the sun went down, the luminaries cast light on the memorial.
After an eleventh-hour scramble on the eve of the 11th anniversary, the states of New York and New Jersey have come to an agreement with New York City on how to pay for the Sept. 11 Museum at Ground Zero. So, construction will begin again.
The museum was supposed to open this month but has been plagued by delays due to squabbling over who was picking up the tab. It's expected to house artifacts such as the staircase workers used to escape the attacks.
Officials say construction will begin soon, though it's not clear when the museum will be finished.
A number of local 9/11 events are taking place this morning.
In Yardley, a remembrance ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m., where firefighters will read the names of each Bucks County victim.
In Philadelphia, a memorial walk will begin at 9:59 a.m. at Fireman's Hall Museum and continue to the Betsy Ross House.
And at 11 a.m., a dedication ceremony for the new 9/11 Memorial Plaza will be held at Veterans Plaza in Avalon.
